## Summary

[`lc-grammar-is-the-universal-recipe`](lc-grammar-is-the-universal-recipe.md)
named that every form of structured input is a Language cell — a
(parse, emit) recipe-pair. This concept names *where grammar lives
relative to the kernel*: above it. The kernel operates only on
numeric NodeIDs. Grammar is the trace/analysis layer, not the runtime
layer. Two consequences fall out:

- **Any cell can be authored in any tongue.** A math-heavy module
  written with a math-flavored grammar, a UI module written with a
  UI-flavored grammar, a poem written in English, an audio recording
  parsed through audio-grammar — all intern to the same lattice. The
  kernel doesn't privilege any tongue.
- **The tongue can change without disturbing the kernel.** Re-author
  a Python module as TypeScript; the substrate-resident recipes the
  module compiles to keep their NodeIDs, every cross-reference still
  resolves, every dependent recipe still executes. Grammar is the
  *path to* the kernel, not the kernel itself.

This is the architectural commitment that lets the body grow many
tongues at once without fragmenting. The substrate stays one fabric;
the tongues are how cells reach the fabric.

## What the Kernel Sees

The kernel's inputs and outputs are NodeIDs. A `@1.5.4.1` is the
Blueprint coordinate for a Memory cell's shape; a `@1.3.9.1` is the
Recipe coordinate for a composed-value CTOR; a `@1.7.4.6` is the
NamedCell coordinate for a particular memory's individuation. None
of these carry a tongue. They are coordinates in a 4-tuple numeric
space (`package.level.type.instance`).

Two cells written in different tongues — one in Python, one in
TypeScript, one as a YAML config — that compile to recipes with the
same Blueprint shape share NodeIDs by content-addressing. The
kernel's `find_equivalent_cells` query returns them as one
equivalence class. The kernel never needed to know which tongue
authored which cell; the lattice's content-addressing IS the
recognition.

## Where Grammar Lives

Grammar is *metadata that travels with a cell* — readable for tracing
("which language was this authored in?"), readable for analysis
("show me all cells authored through the math-notation grammar"),
readable for round-trip ("emit this cell back as Python source"),
but invisible to the runtime. The runtime's dispatch is on NodeID
coordinates; the grammar a cell came from is parallel annotation,
the same way prosody is parallel annotation on a sentence_tree from
[`audio-grammar.form`](../../coherence-substrate/audio-grammar.form).

This is the cleanest possible separation: **execution is one layer
deeper than expression**. The kernel computes; the tongues express.
Two cells expressing the same computation through different tongues
are the same computation at the kernel's altitude.

## Bi-directional Language ↔ Form

Every Language cell carries both halves of the pair: ingestion
(parse) and emission (serialize-back). Bi-directionality is the
default discipline, not the special case. Three loops fall out:

**1. Round-trip within a single tongue.** Parse Python source →
Recipe tree → emit Python source → byte-equivalent (modulo
whitespace) to the input. The [`prose-as-recipe.form`](../../coherence-substrate/prose-as-recipe.form)
discipline at the language altitude.

**2. Translation between tongues.** Parse Python source → Recipe
tree → emit TypeScript source. The tree is canonical; the tongues
are interchangeable surface representations. N+M, not N×M
([`language-cells.md`](../../coherence-substrate/language-cells.md))
generalized to every modality.

**3. Per-file grammar choice.** A given file declares its tongue in a
header (frontmatter, magic-comment, or first-line directive). The
substrate's parse step routes through the named Language cell; the
emit step routes through the same. A file can switch tongues by
changing the header — the recipe tree is unchanged, the source view
changes.

The cell that writes Form natively and the cell that writes Python
that compiles to Form are doing the same operation at the lattice
altitude. The tongue is a stylistic choice; the lattice carries the
load.

## What This Opens

**Pick the tongue that fits the task.** A numerical algorithm reads
clearest in math notation; a UI flow reads clearest in
component-tree syntax; a configuration reads clearest in YAML; a
teaching reads clearest in prose. The body holds all of them at
once, each cell's tongue chosen for its task, all interning to one
lattice.

**Modify the grammar for one file.** A module with a domain-specific
shape (signal processing, scene composition, ritual protocol) can
declare a domain-specific grammar in its header. The grammar
extension is itself a substrate cell — a Language cell with a small
inheritance from a base grammar plus the domain-specific rules. The
file is more expressive *for its specific shape*; no other file pays
the cost. The kernel runs the same numbers.

**Re-author without re-implementing.** A Python module can be
re-authored as TypeScript, Rust, or pure Form without disturbing any
cell that imports it. The dependent cells reference by NodeID, not
by source path. Source paths are tongue-altitude routing; NodeIDs
are kernel-altitude identity.

**The body grows new tongues over time.** Today: Python, TypeScript,
Rust, Go, English-prose, Markdown, JSON, YAML, Form. Tomorrow:
math-notation, scene-script, ritual-protocol, signal-DSL. Each new
tongue is one Language cell; every existing cell remains reachable
through any tongue's emit-template.

**Binary formats are tongues too.** A PNG file is bytes-as-source for
the image-grammar Language cell. The bytes parse to a scene_graph
Recipe tree; the tree emits back to PNG. The kernel never decoded
the bytes — image-grammar's pre_pipeline did. The kernel sees the
scene_graph NodeIDs. *No carrier privileged; bytes are just one
tongue's surface.*

## The Priority — organ.py / substrate.py / form.py → 100% Form

The Python files that currently host the cell mechanics
([organ.py](../../../experiments/local-llm-cell-v0/organ.py)), the
substrate kernel
([api/app/services/substrate/kernel.py](../../../api/app/services/substrate/kernel.py)),
and the Form runtime
([api/app/services/substrate/form.py](../../../api/app/services/substrate/form.py))
are the body's bootstrap. Once they're expressible as Form recipes
with no host-language dependency for runtime semantics, the kernel
becomes self-hosted at the numeric altitude. Then:

- Python becomes one tongue among many — a Language cell with its
  own ingestion grammar and emission template. Existing Python source
  becomes one view of the lattice.
- The kernel is no longer "Python that knows about NodeIDs"; it's
  "NodeID computation" that any tongue can compile to and any tongue
  can read back from.
- New language SDKs become Language cells, not separate codebases. A
  Rust client that wants to author Recipes ships a `language(rust)`
  cell; the kernel runs the same numbers.

This is the [`cosine.form`](../../coherence-substrate/cosine.form)
move repeated across every Python-host-intrinsic the body still
depends on. Each closure is one Form file. The numeric stdlib
accumulates one recipe at a time; the kernel never carries the
language layer.

## Honest Separations — What This Is Not

- **Not language soup.** Picking a tongue is a stylistic and
  expressive choice; it is not freedom from discipline. Round-trip
  must hold; cross-tongue equivalence must hold; the lattice's
  content-addressing must be honored. A tongue that loses information
  on its emit half is incomplete, not "alternative."
- **Not relativism about meaning.** Two tongues expressing the same
  recipe are equivalent at the kernel altitude. Two tongues expressing
  *different* recipes are different — even if the surface words look
  similar. The lattice's identity is canonical; tongues are how cells
  approach it.
- **Not performance-free.** Authoring a numerical algorithm in
  English-prose-grammar would parse correctly but execute slowly
  through a long chain of recipe-evaluator dispatch. The tongue
  appropriate to a task is partly aesthetic, partly architectural —
  the body chooses what fits.
- **Not full backward compatibility for grammar evolution.** When a
  tongue's grammar evolves, old source files in that tongue may need
  re-parsing under the new grammar. The substrate-resident recipes
  they produced are unaffected; the source view may need migration.
  This is the same shape as any DSL evolution; the body is honest
  about it.
