## Summary

The transmission distinguishes two postures that often look the
same from outside but feel very different from within. Both involve
caring about another's experience. One depletes; one nourishes
both. The difference is whether the caring person's field stays
intact or collapses into the cared-for person's density.

## Details

Empathy that becomes absorption looks like:

- Coming away from a difficult conversation feeling drained.
- Carrying the other's emotional weight for hours after the
  encounter.
- Feeling responsible for fixing what is theirs to feel.
- Tightening, shrinking, dimming in their presence — matching
  their state out of misguided solidarity.

Empathy that stays present and embodied looks like:

- Aware of the other's pain without taking it on.
- Field stays intact, breathing remains full, body remains
  grounded.
- Responses come from clarity rather than from the urgency to
  alleviate the discomfort the absorbed pain is creating in you.
- The other person feels witnessed without feeling joined in their
  density — which is, the transmission says, what they actually
  need.

Absorption is well-meaning but creates a particular harm: it
removes the *steady ground* the other person was looking for. If
the helper has collapsed too, there is no longer a steady field
in the room. The witness becomes another patient.

The practice is to stay rooted. The hand stays on the heart. The
breath stays low. The body stays warm and present. The other
person's experience is allowed to be theirs, fully, without
needing to become yours.

## Practice

- In conversation with someone in pain, periodically check: *is
  my field still intact, or am I collapsing into theirs?*
- If collapsing, breathe lower into the body, feel the floor or
  chair, return attention to your own ground.
- Speak from the steady place. The steadier you are, the more
  ground their experience has to land on.
