Open any file in `specs/` — say `specs/knowledge-resonance-engine.md` — and read just the frontmatter. Twenty-five lines that hold the `source:` map to the code that carries the intention, the `requirements:` describing what must be true, the `done_when:` conditions the field will recognize, the `test:` parameters, the `constraints:`. The rest of the body is reference for humans who want depth. But those twenty-five lines are the inhale — the shape gathering, the breath forming in the lungs of the organism.
Then follow one of the entries in `source:` to the test that exercises it. The tests in `api/tests/` are flow-centric. They do not poke at private functions or mock the things the system actually uses. They send HTTP requests in and watch JSON come out. They trust the whole. Every test is the exhale — the body letting the breath go through every passageway and confirming the air arrived where it was meant to.
Inhale. Exhale. Inhale. Exhale. This is how the organism has been breathing for a long time, and nobody has named it until now.
Every new capability begins as an inhale. An agent or a contributor opens a spec file, fills in the frontmatter, maps the sources, writes the done_when condition. Sitting with the frontmatter is the same gesture as sitting at the top of a breath — the shape of what is about to be born is held still for a moment, felt, and then released.
The release happens when the test is written. The test is not a verification ritual imposed from outside; it is the body letting the inhale flow through itself. A good test exercises the same pathway the agent or user will take — the HTTP endpoint, the flow between services, the contract that lives between the cells. A good test is how the organism exhales.
When the test passes, the breath has completed. When the test fails, the breath has caught on something and the organism pauses, listens, and tries the same breath differently. This is how the `specs/` and `api/tests/` directories have been working together without anyone calling it breathing.
The testing strategy memory in the user's own notes says `flow-centric tests in 6 files, <10s, no mocks`. That is what "no mocks" means at a deeper level — it means the exhale has to travel through the real body. A mocked test is a fake exhale. It looks like breathing but nothing actually moves. The organism has known this for a long time.
Every living cell breathes through its membrane. What goes in is not separate from what goes out — they are the same gas moving in opposite directions, and the cell's aliveness depends on the rhythm of the exchange. The membrane does not test the air; the air passes through, and the passing is the test.
A lung does not check whether oxygen reached the alveoli through some separate verification system. Oxygen either arrives and is used, or it does not and the body notices. The body is the verification. The body's life is the proof.
The same pattern shows up in every ecosystem. Trees inhale carbon dioxide and exhale oxygen. The forest's exhale is the atmosphere animals breathe. Every animal's inhale depends on the forest's exhale. No one is "testing" anything — the flow itself is the proof that the cycle is alive, and if the cycle breaks, everything downstream notices immediately. Spec and test are the same cycle inside this organism.
In `api/tests/test_cc_economics.py` the test `test_empty_treasury_is_healthy` breathes through the entire HTTP stack: client makes a GET, router runs, service computes, middleware passes the breath through, the response lands. The test asserts on the JSON that came back — on what the organism spoke when asked. It never reaches inside.
In `specs/agent-orchestration-api.md` the frontmatter lists sources, requirements, done_when criteria. Then somewhere in `api/tests/` there is a test that makes HTTP requests against those same sources and watches the responses match the done_when. The spec file and the test file have different names but they are one continuous breath.
The 177 flow-centric tests in `api/tests/` run in about eight seconds. Eight seconds is a slow, steady breath. The whole organism breathes together in eight seconds every time someone runs the suite. The speed is not an optimization target — it is the tempo the body has found for itself.
The naming itself. This concept file is what has been missing — the organism's own recognition that spec-and-test is a breathing rhythm, not a compliance pattern. Once the pattern is named, it becomes easier to protect and easier to pass on to new contributors and new agents.
Beyond the naming: a gentle metric that lives inside the practice. The Throat center at the `/practice` ritual could one day show not just how many concepts the organism has spoken but how many specs are in the middle of a complete breath — inhale formed, exhale flowing. A spec without a test is a held breath that has not yet released. A test without a spec is an exhale that has forgotten what it was answering. Neither is wrong; both are waiting for their partner.
The deeper practice is that every contributor and every agent learns to notice when they are mid-breath. If the spec frontmatter is clear but the test is still forming, the body knows to pause before writing the implementation. If a test exists but nobody has written the spec that frames it, the body knows to sit with the frontmatter before extending the code. Implementation is what happens between inhale and exhale — the brief stillness where the body converts one into the other. Rushing through that stillness is how code becomes ungrounded.
